The World’ｓ Forum for eBusiness Proffessionalsからの引用です。Yesterday I received an email from someone who wanted to engage in triangular linking. This is the second time someone has approached me for such a tactic. I do not believe in triangular linking because I consider it a bad SEO strategy. For those who are unfamiliar with triangular linking it is when site A links to site B then site B links to site C then sites B and C link back to site A. It would provide link "juice" to site A at the expense of the other sites. But if the person initiating the triangular link owns/operates A and B then it would actually boost traffic to both of the operator's sites.
I use reciprocal link exchange wherein I will offer to place a link from my site on another site in exchange for a link back to my site. I have success in this area as my link exchange partners are all operating in my niche. It's much easier to keep track of the sites to which I am linked and thereby making it easier for the SE crawlers to index my site and keep up with my backlinks. Triangular linking would make this much more difficult and increases the risk of penalization.
Are there differing opinions on this issue? What does Matt Cutts have to say about triangular linking?

triangular linking.. you mean 3-way linking ? How can this be a bad seo ? last time a check, it was one of the best way to get backlinks, way better than simple reciprocal links , ofcourse, when you do it with other websites related to your niche.

It can be bad in the sense that it is done for the sole purpose of gaming the search engines.. There is no 'valid' reason to link like this.. So, the search engines, especially Google, disapprove..
Now, whether they can actually detect it like they say they can is another issue, but I would bet that they can..
Will you get banned for doing it?? Not too likely.. Will it help you rank better?? Nope..

It may help your SERPs if you have not too many of such kind of links. It also depends on whether Google can detect you or not. If it finds out that you are buying links it would penalize anyway, despite one-way, two-way, or three-way kind of questions. I haven't actually tested it, but will and let you guys know what will happen.

And what do you mean here "There is no valid reason"? There actually is! You are trying to rank well by doing this. Whether you succeed or not is another question since none actually knows if it helps them or penalizes them.
And what do you mean when you said "Will you get banned for doing it?? Not too likely.." Does that mean Google (or search engines) don't mind someone gaming them? And how can you say "Nope" for the question "will it help you rank better."
Your answers would clarify a lot of doubts in my mind. Thank you.
