In 2021, posting quality content isn’t going to cut it. The challenge: make that quality obvious and compelling to readers in 3 seconds (and dropping). Just when you thought attention spans couldn’t get any shorter, 2010 shortened them even more.

The Information Age is dead. In case you haven’t noticed, we don’t need any more information. The challenge here is to help people find what they don’t know they’re looking for.

Google isn’t particularly good at solving these problems. Nor is anything else, yet. What’s a small business owner to do about this? Here’s where it gets simple.

Shift your communication strategy from talking-based to listening-based. This may not sound like rocket science, but there’s more to it than you might think.

For example, you might think it’s a given that collecting e-mail addresses and sending out a monthly newsletter will “keep you in front of your audience.” But what if you spend the same amount of time and energy reading other newsletters instead, making a point of responding to the good ones?

Instead of thinking of more ways to add noise to the already-cluttered information stream, think of ways to make full use of the best information that’s already out there. That doesn’t mean to stop creating content – it’s just about shifting some of your resources.

Why Work Happy Now?

I have always struggled to enjoy various jobs. The memories were always enjoyable, but while I was working a job I had difficulty staying engaged. Most of it was my fault, so I began studying myself, books and other blogs to see if I could make a few connections. I started a personal development blog three years ago, but kept drifting toward work happiness. I knew other people had this problem too, so after a flop of a personal development blog I made the leap and started Work Happy Now. Best creative decision of my life.

How long has Work Happy Now been around?

Work Happy Now has been around for a little over a year. It’s still a work in progress. I’ve changed the look of my site, added video, launched an ebook “Work Happy the Google Way,” and I’m itching to expand some more. Like any business, I have to pick the strong return on investments and put the other ideas on the back burner. It’s not always easy to decide where to put my time, but that’s what creating a business is all about.

What sorts of struggles (if any) have you had to endure with your business over time?

The business is just in its infancy. I still work a full time job. My goal is to have Work Happy Now become a full time career by this time next year. To answer your question…I’ve lost count of the struggles. A brief synopsis would be cold-calling businesses, keeping up with regular blog posts, responding to every single reader question, staying outside my comfort zone and giving more and more value.

How did you come up with the name for your site?

I’m a big believer in branding. I wanted a name that would be easy to remember and would tell the exact story of how I wanted to help people. Voila – Work Happy Now. I really wanted WorkHappy.com, but it was taken. I actually like the “now” on the end because it’s all about maximizing our work happiness in the present moment.

If you could give advice to other people who are struggling with their entrepreneurial dreams, what would you say?

Be persistent. That means being so freak’n passionate about your concept that your wife, husband, boyfriend, girlfriend or whoever asks you to come to bed because you are working too hard. I have my days when I can’t sit in front of the computer, but they are few and far in between. Starting your own business is about chipping away at the mountain until you are on top. It has taken four years, but I’m finally reaching my stride.

Do you think it’s better to work from home or in an an office?

It’s all about knowing yourself. If you need an office to get away from distractions then do it. If you can’t afford an office then make the best of what you have.

What sorts of things do you do for fun when you’re not working?

Spend time with my wife, walk the dog every evening (great stress reliever), Yoga every morning, meditation to keep the gauge of my mental state fresh and hang out with friends and family.

Do you have any advice on how to keep things balanced?

My advice is to listen to your needs. I have a full time job (40 hours a week), and I’m also working about 25 hours a week on my blog. It’s a lot of hours, but I always find time to take breaks, exercise, and spend time with loved ones.

What’s one of the most challenging things you’ve had to deal with regarding Work Happy Now?

Building a community is the most challenging. I want to respond on every person’s blog who comments on mine, but I can’t. I have to pick the areas where I get the most bang for my time.

What was one of the most rewarding?

The most rewarding has been the feedback. The emails I get thanking me. The comments from people who I’ve helped has been the best part. They appreciate the value that I give. It just makes me want to work even harder and keep coming up with new ideas.

What are your feelings on social networks like Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.?

They are awesome tools. They help me reach new people without dropping any cash on advertising. It’s these relationships that I foster and support with all my energy. I don’t put a lot of money into Work Happy Now, less than $1,000, but I do that because I want Work Happy Now to grow organically. I want people to want me. The best way to do that is to be on social networks, trying to connect and share ideas.

Google just recently announced that they will be beta testing a Cost-Per-Action Adwords feature soon. This feature will allow advertisers to only pay for advertising once a sale is made and/or a lead is generated, just like a CPA affiliate program.

According to the details Google has released, the Google Adwords CPA program will work just like most affiliate programs, but will run on the Google Adsense content network. Google will not display the CPA ads on its search network.

How/where/when will the ads be displayed? Google says that “publishers in the Google content network can choose to place your ads on their website”. If the CPA ads work like other Google Adwords though, the system will automatically select and display the most lucrative ads to display on a website. This would mean that it will be very, very important that advertisers make their offer as lucrative as possible. It remains to be seen though, how much manual control advertisers will have in selecting ads.

By combining their massive advertiser base, their content network, and the Adwords infrastructure, Google may very well have set themselves up to be the new leader in the affiliate marketing field. We’ll just have to wait and see!…

As most now know Google is in the TV advertising game. All TV ads are running through Dish Network for now. The user interface for the TV advertising is consistently simple as the AdWords advertising.  Still the options we love with AdWords like day parting, budgeting, demographic targeting based on networks, programing etc. However all changes take effect the next day. Great tracking as we are accustomed to from using analytics data. For those of us that have used radio advertising they do have a Market Place for finding people to help us develop our TV Ads. With the Google TV Ads you can block and select the actual programing (show’s) you want and don’t want to show for.  I believe this is a great step in the right direction for the control and reporting that small to large business are looking for with TV. Obviously for the cost of creating ads and the actual air time it will be reserved for those companies that can maximize a relatively higher advertising budget with Google TV advertising. Small businesses often use paid search marketing as an advertising tool.  And often times, it does not go very well.  Dentists, lawyers, doctors, landscapers, and other service based small businesses that have a local footprint can use Google AdWords to gain online exposure. However, often times businesses don’t get the results they are looking for.  One item in the AdWords tool kit that can help generate leads for local businesses in search is the Google Local Extension.

Before I go into Local Extensions, let’s be sure that we have some basics down for businesses when using AdWords.  These are tenets that we use with any small business AdWords blog.  To review:

  1. Be sure you are only using the search network
  2. Have your Google Analytics account linked to your AdWords account to measure traffic
  3. Double check your geographic target and make sure you are advertising only in the local footprint you want exposure
  4. Be sure that your keyword selection is specific, and for very generalized terms you are using phrase or exact match terms to avoid any wasteful clicks

Once you’ve got that down, you can move on to extensions. To enable, go into your campaigns view within the AdWords interface.  Then go to the Ad Extensions tab.

From here – select Location Extensions from the drop down list of Extension options.

From here, you have two options.  You can either use your address from your linked Google Places account, or you can  use”Manually Entered Addresses”.  This is a helpful option in case you have multiple businesses and are testing some geo-targets.

Once this is in play you now will see this address appear within ad copy in certain query situations (note: you will not see the address extension show up in all ad displays). Having this extension show up in a query has several advantages:

  • It gives businesses another advantage in terms of taking up precious screen real estate within the top positions on search engine result pages.
  • It reinforces your business’s visibility in the local community.
  • Shows a phone number that allows searchers to immediately call and contact you.
  • Provides a link to Directions to your business – which can very beneficial for brick and mortar businesses that depend on Google for quick strike leads ranging from take out food to  Christmas tree  farms or even basement waterproofing

AdWords provides many good search advertising options for local businesses to generate leads, calls, and sales.  Using local extensions is one of many tools that can lead to success in pay per click marketing.…
